The Sound Atlas in Handpan Studio is a map of handpan scales you can explore like a traveller. Every scale is sorted, playable in one click and shown in colour on a pan. You roam through moods from different cultures and countries, you compare, you feel — before you can even name a single note.

Why an Atlas instead of a list

A list of scales is a wall of names: D Kurd, Celtic, Hijaz, Amara… To a beginner, that means nothing. The Atlas flips the problem: instead of reading names, you listen and you see. A scale is no longer a label — it’s a colour of emotion your ear recognises instantly.

It’s also a way to understand where the handpan comes from. Many of its scales draw on musical traditions around the world — Mediterranean modes, Eastern moods, Celtic colours. The Atlas makes that journey tangible: you move from one culture to another in seconds.

Browse by mood

Each scale carries an emotional colour: bright, melancholic, mysterious, soothing. You can let the mood of the moment guide you rather than theory. That’s often how you find “your” scale — the one that moves you before you even know why.

Listen before you choose

With one click, you hear the scale sound. No need to own it or imagine it: Handpan Studio plays it for you. That’s precious when you’re hesitating before buying an acoustic handpan, or before loading a scale onto your electronic Neotone handpan.

See the scale in colour

Every scale appears on a pan with the ChromaKeys: each note, its colour. You immediately see the layout, the number of notes, the place of the central ding. This visual reading is the same everywhere in the app — it’s the method explained in Playing handpan by colours.

From listening to playing

Once a scale wins you over, you don’t stay a spectator. You can visualise it, spot its chords as Constellations, and start playing with colours as your cues. And if you feel like composing your own, scale creation is right there (free in acoustic mode, exports carry a watermark).
