The 4 magic chords on handpan

The “4 magic chords” are a short chord sequence that recurs in thousands of popular songs. On the handpan, Handpan Studio’s Logic Mode puts them under your hands in colour: four degrees, four emotions, and a whole swath of music opening up — without reading a single note.

Why four chords are enough

If so many songs feel “easy to recognise”, it’s often because they share the same harmonic skeleton. Four degrees loop around, in a slightly variable order, beneath countless hits. It’s not writer’s laziness: this sequence works because it tells a complete emotional story — a departure, an opening, a doubt, a return.

You already know this sequence by heart, even without realising it: your ear has heard it thousands of times. Logic Mode simply gives you the means to play it, by making those four roles visible and accessible.

Playing them on handpan in colour

In Logic Mode, each degree carries a stable colour and emotion, as explained in Playing with emotions: the 7 coloured degrees. The four magic chords then become four colours to chain:

• Degree I — the anchor, “home”.
• Degree V — momentum, the urge to go further.
• Degree VI — the nostalgic, bittersweet tint.
• Degree IV — openness, the wide space.

You no longer have to remember chord names or abstract positions. You follow a sequence of colours, and the magic loop turns under your hands. It’s the same gesture described in Accompanying songs on handpan: chaining chords the way a guitarist would.

Vary the order, change the mood

The magic also lies in its flexibility. Start with the VI instead of the I, and the same sequence takes on a more melancholic colour. End on the V rather than the I, and you leave the loop “hanging”, ready to go again. By playing with the order of colours, you move from a bright song to a nostalgic ballad — with the same four chords.

A fingering to chain smoothly

To keep the loop running without a hitch, the app can offer a suggested fingering to move from one colour to the next cleanly. It’s a help for the gesture, reliable mostly in electronic Logic Mode, never a rule: your hand stays free to improvise.
