Which handpan stand? Atlas Pro vs Atlas All

Which handpan stand? Atlas Pro vs Atlas All

A handpan stand is what the instrument lives on: it holds it at the right height to play standing or seated, without resting it on your legs. This article applies to acoustic and electronic handpans alike.

I am a partner of Atlas, an Italian maker. Here I compare its two stands, the Atlas Pro and the Atlas All, using the maker’s figures and my own words.

Why I play standing

Here is how I put it on my stands page:

“Ever since I started playing handpan, I have always played standing. First because I am a singer, and for me it is the best position to sing freely.”

On stage I have several handpans, an electronic kick pedal under my foot and other instruments around me. Everything stands, everything is within reach.

My stage setup: several instruments, each on its own stand, all at playing height. Notice how everything is organised around the height of the handpans. (The stands shown here are the ones I used before Atlas.)

Height decides everything:

“A few centimetres too high and I no longer sing in tune; a few centimetres too low and I can no longer reach my bass notes.”

My video: why play handpan standing, with an Atlas stand

In this video (in French) I sum it up: I have invested in almost every handpan stand out there, and I explain why today I enjoy playing on Atlas.

What Atlas does differently: magnets

With Atlas, the handpan is neither screwed nor strapped. It rests on a floating disc held by eight magnets. Atlas states that the magnets are covered and placed under the spots where the instrument touches the support.

Atlas also says the support is designed for all handpans, tested with many makers, and compatible with nitrided steel, stainless steel and Ember Steel.

Atlas All: wooden version, standing.

On the left, the same Atlas Pro extended (handpan on top) and folded: notice the gap between its two heights. On the right, the Atlas All with its extensions, for standing play.

The Atlas Pro, my favourite

What I say about it in my video:

“Super sleek in aluminium, and it sets up three times faster. So yes, it is much more pro and much lighter, with quality materials that last. Ultra quick, much slimmer, easy to carry and to store.”

And in writing, on 6 September 2026:

“The Pro has one flaw: the wooden head is not offered, neither as an option nor included, and that is its only flaw, but it is worth noting. Still, I prefer the Pro.”

To be precise: the Atlas All head has two parts, a wooden part and a plastic part. The plastic top is the same head as on the Pro stand (the tripod and its small head). As I put it: “so the wooden part isn’t needed on the Pro stand”. It’s only for seated play.

The Atlas All, the one that also plays seated

The Atlas All is modular: its wooden head, the Atlas Body, fits between your knees for seated play. You then add the legs, then the extensions, to play standing.

A seated musician plays a handpan resting on the Atlas Body head held between his knees

The Atlas Body head on its own: the handpan does not rest on the thighs, it is held between the knees. It comes included with the Atlas All.

My view of this model, in the rest of the same note of 6 September:

“So you cannot use the head alone to play seated, whereas the wooden version can, but it takes longer to set up, is bulkier to carry and less adjustable.”

How to choose

  • You mostly play standing and travel a lot → the Atlas Pro: aluminium, 1.8 kg, bag included, up to 109 cm.
  • You also want to play seated, without the handpan on your legs → the Atlas All, with its wooden head included.

Best of all, come and try them: both models are at the showroom in Paris (20th). Put a handpan on, set the height, play.
