Forbrain: a headset to hear your own voice and sing in tune
The Forbrain headset plays your voice back live through bone conduction: a training tool for singing, pitch and voice with the handpan. I have tested it.
Singing while you play the handpan means listening to two things at once: the instrument and your own voice. And we hear our own voice poorly. The Forbrain headset is made for that: hearing yourself live, more clearly, so you can work on it.
This applies to every handpan, acoustic or electronic: the headset doesn’t plug into the instrument, it listens to your voice.
What it is
The Forbrain: a band that goes behind the neck, two bone-conduction pads (they sit in front of the ears, not inside them) and a boom mic.
It’s a bone-conduction headset with a microphone. You speak or sing, and your voice comes straight back to you through the bones in front of your ears.
On the way, your voice goes through a dynamic filter that lifts the highs and softens the lows. You hear yourself differently, more clearly.
It’s standalone: no screen, no app. Put it on, switch it on, sing.
My take
I’ve tested it. In my own words: “the experience is striking”.
What it’s for (and what it isn’t)
It’s not a stage mic. It’s a training tool.
How to use it: a few minutes a day, reading aloud or singing, to work on your voice, diction, pitch and focus.
With the handpan, it’s a good companion for sessions where you set your voice over a scale. If you’re first looking for the right key to sing in, also read transposing to sing with your handpan.
I don’t expect anything medical from it: I recommend it for voice work, nothing more.
